Medieval Lettering – Q

The 17th letter in the modern English alphabet, the letter Q is found in medieval manuscripts due to the common usage of this consonant in the Latin language.

11 Century Q

This ornate letter Q comes from an 11th century copy of Moralia in Job, St. Gregory the Great’s commentary on Job originally written between 578 and 595. From Angers, BM, 186 (0178).

12th century Q

This blue inked Q contains a cat-like human face in the center.  From Angers, BM, 0194 (0186).
